Clay can be found anywhere in the world, mostly close to riverbanks, sea or countrysides. Whilst traveling, I started to look for clay to bring home and add this clay to a tea bowl design, so I can look back on beautiful memories whenever I pour myself a cup of coffee or tea. Every type of clay has its own structure, composition, colour and way of firing. This makes every vessel unique.
I try to meddle as little as possible with the clay, in order to keep it pure - so no sieving or washing. Sometimes there are tiny stones in it, or grass, but often this is not a nuisance or obstacle, but rather a challenge and a limitation from which beautiful designs evolve. The clay itself decides the way it will be used - it can be thrown when flexible, mixed with other clays, used in a (wood ash) glaze or prepared for slip decorations.
If you find clay and wish to turn it into something special, please contact me. Perhaps we can figure out a design with the use of this clay, so I can make you a lasting memory vessel or an extra special gift.
